Dear Stan of Boston;
Thank you for your poignant and direct question. As indicated, This is an international question that arises regularly throughout the year. Generally, this question can be self answered from the roles of replies or rebuttals. Look, we know that every organization may exhibit a belief that does not fit the needs of a group or one individual. Here in the USA, this area of belief in deity goes back the the year 1733. And, in Europe, much much longer.
Freemasonry is not a church, certainly not a religion.
The form of a Supreme Architect of the Universe can take on many different meanings to many.
Interpretations also can vary greatly. There are many beliefs that transcend all traditional lines of religion. The common-denominator falls on the term “oath”. It can be asked: “how can one be certain that truth is able to be carried out unequivocally without taking an oath?” That said, when one is seated on a jury, the right hand is raised with an oath. When one is call to the bench in a court of law for testimony, the right hand is raise over a book of divine law with an oath. Contempt of a court, or rejection of testimony would be the outcome for avoiding this oath.
Maybe you can clarify the Position of Freemasonry on your subjects. There is a Statewide Open House in Mass. within all Lodges on March 27tth, from 9am-3pm. Members and Officers will be on hand to discuss the elements of joining and tours and literature are available. In Boston, at 186 Tremont Street. Search it out, your call.
