I don’t know that I know a Freemason in Massachusetts, and I used the Find a Lodge option.  Living basically a stone’s throw from the Cambridge/Somerville city line and, additionally, being part of the Harvard community, makes based upon geography and affiliation, well, makes even approaching any lodge a little daunting.  That many lodges are based out of the same address makes the options confusing as well.

For one interested in what would basically be a “cold” approach, does any have any words of advice on how to go about this?  What are the basic and/or practical differences between local lodges?  Is it just cast and meeting date, or are there differences in average age, for instance, or size, special interest in particular types of social activities, etc.?  Reason says that in an organization which increases its membership through referral would produce a situation where its local affiliates have their own “subcultures,” for lack of a better term.  The logic is, you are approached by those whom you know, and generally these people tend to be like you in some way(s).  How applicable is this reasoning even?

Hi,

The primary difference between our lodges are the composition of the members, and the family, social, and community service activities the lodges choose to participate in.  That being said, all of our lodges are comprised of good men who are interested in the opportunity to make you a part of their lodge and to develop a friendship with you.  The only way to find out for certain which lodge might be the best fit would be to talk with some of the members and learn more about them.  You’ve found the “Lodge Locator” so you probably also learned that the name and contact information of a Brother for every lodge in the state is listed.  I encourage you to touch base.  They will welcome your inquiry.  Although the process might appear a little intimidating, I think you’ll find that everyone you deal with is there to help you.

You mentioned being a part of the Harvard community.  You may have discovered The Harvard Lodge, which meets in Boston, is comprised entirely of men who have a connection there.  If you are interested in learning more, I encourage you to email .
