I’m 18 and found out a few years ago that my great grandfather and my grandfather were both Masons and was excited about trying to become a member. My grandfather hasn’t gone to a meeting in years so he said that he wasn’t sure if he could sponsor me, but thinks that it is a wonderful idea that I try and join. I have a worry though, being so young, would there be anyone close to my age? Should I wait until I’m older to join? How would I go about becoming a mason? I’ve heard about the wonderful things that masons do for the community, and want to be in a group of people willing to make a difference. Thank you for your time!

Alex- It depends on your state of residence. Some states permit 18 year old men to petition, some require all new masons to be at least 21. If your state permits 18 year olds to petition, I advise you to go ahead, and request a petition form right away.

The procedure is not complicated, but there is a procedure. You normally do not need a “sponsor”, but you should be prepared to provide your prospective lodge, with the names of at least two or three people who can vouch for your character.

Thank you for your question.

Because the eligible age to become a Mason in Massachusetts is 18, you would obviously by on the youngest age of the spectrum. That being said, there will be other members of the lodge in your general age group. In addition, you will be welcomed by all of the members of the lodge regardless of your age.
