Many people falsly believe that they need to have a family member who was a Freemason in order to join. This is completely false. In fact, to my knowledge, there are no members of my family who are Freemasons. When you submit an application, you are not asked if anyone else in your family is a brother.
Of course, your father CAN recommend you for membership in his lodge, and that is quite a special experience for both father and son. In fact, in Massachusetts, there is a special medal to be worn by fathers who’s sons have become Masons.
However, to join a lodge other than your father’s lodge, you need a member of THAT lodge to recommend you, so you will need to meet the members of the lodge you want to join, and have one of them recommend you, which can be easy as just meeting with the brother so that he can vouch for you.
Best of luck.
