Okay I’m not 18 yet far from it. But when I turn 18, how do I join exactly? I don’t know anyone thats a mason either.

Thanks for your question.

Sounds like you live in Massachusetts. If you do, we have an entire network set up to help you find a Lodge. Just let us know where you live—or contact one of the Ambassadors listed above directly. Or you can use the “find a lodge” feature at the top of this Site. Once you reach 18 in Massachusetts, you can become a Mason, so now is a great time to get started.

Finding a Lodge should be easy and fun. You can visit Lodges where you live or work, and see where you feel comfortable. Then you just have to apply.

You should know that most Lodges “go dark” in the summer—not resurfacing until September. So don’t get discouraged if you can’t visit a Lodge until then. Until then, Lodge officers should still be able to speak with you, and you may even be able to meet with members before the Lodges start up agian in the fall.

Good luck—and let us know how it goes or if you need any more help.

Hi,
I am 21 years old and still in college. I am really interested into joining this great brotherhood. I also do not know any mason, so i was wondering how would I then become a member. Also what other requirements are needed of me?

Thank You

Since your residence is in Illinois, you must apply to a lodge sponsored by the Grand Lodge of Illinois. Here are the requirements to petition (apply) to an Illinois lodge:

- Be age 18 or older

- Have resided in Illinois resident for at least six months (unless specially waived)

- Be able to read and write English

- Be of good moral and social character; and

- Believe in a Supreme Deity (necessary to take certain oaths, otherwise no obligation
would be binding upon you).

If you meet these requirements, then you can petition to join Freemasonry. You need not know any masons personally.

You can check the webpage for the Grand Lodge of Illinois at:

http://www.ilmason.org

Please send me a PM, with your name/address/email/phone, and I will assist you in locating a lodge near your residence. You will then contact the lodge secretary, and obtain a petition. You will fill out the petition form, and submit it to the lodge secretary. Then you are on your way to becoming a Mason.

Good Luck

Flash-

You might be interested in learning about the Order of DeMolay, http://www.demolay.org, a group founded, sponsored, and largely run by Masons to share our values and experiences with young men between the age 12 and 21.

It is a good path for young men into Freemasonry and will give you the opportunity to meet a number of Masons, as well as expand your group of friends.

I was really fascinated by your recruitment movies. Sounds like fairy-tale. It is a pity that I am too old to be a mason.

Too Old?! We have only one age requirement and that is a man be at least 18 years old (21 in some states). There is no expiration or window of opportunity on age. I was introduce the other night to a candidate who was 77 years old. I have seen several candidates join Freemasonry in their 60’s as well as their 70’s. Please don’t feel that you are too old. If you are interested then you should contact a local lodge and talk to someone. I promise you will find someone eager to help you. Let us know how things progress.

I think my case is more complicated and it really makes me sad. If you don’t mind I can explain it to you but in private conversation only. I don’t want to expose my life for everybody’s eyes.

Hi,
My name is Eric Wilkey, My grandfather was a Masion, and so was his father and so forth. I’m 16 years old and I believe that I have to wait two years to become a Maison in the state of Massachusetts, but I’m not sure. I’m wondering sense I’ve been interested for some time now why I am not able to join now? I’m not trying to be impatient, but this was just on my mind.

Thanks,
Eric Wilkey.

Hi, Eric ---

Yes, you do have to wait until you are 18 to petiton Masonry in Massachusetts.  However, as Robert wrote earlier in this thread, and I would strongly endorse, you can join the Order of DeMolay (http://www.demolay.org) or (http://www.massdemolay.org/index.html), as this is a group for young men between 12 and 21 years old.  There are many similarities in the teachings and works of the two organizations.  It will also give you a chance to meet many new friends, including some Masons for when you are old enough to petition a Lodge.

If you are interested in DeMolay, please send me a private message with the town in which you live and I can help you find the DeMolay Chapter which is closest to you.
