Hay I went to a Christan group meeting at my school this week, this was the second time I’ve been to the group and like the first time I didn’t feel right in there. So after the guys preached and what not and the meeting was over, I decided to ask them about how joining the Freemasons effect my religion. The first preacher said “I couldn’t promote that in my church, in fact I have a guy(he forgot his name) that goes around telling how the church and Masons should not be together”. After that he got another preacher to come over and talk to me. This one said the same thing and even said that Freemasons are not with the church and that he had proof. His fist story was that “God” sent him a message telling him to burn the pic of his grand parents, which he eventually did due to him seeing a Square and Compass on his grandfather’s shirt. The second story was just as odd and he also brought up the History Channel’s “documentary”, and how the bible says to never take oaths .
The main thing I wanted your options on is weather taking an oath is really against Christianity or not, and how did your experiences with issues like this fair for your life and spiritual walk.
Personally I have never felt a conflict between my beliefs and the oaths. I would imagine the best comparison would be like being sworn in during a court hearing and swearing that you will “speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me god.” This too is an oath, but is in no way contradictory to what I believe in a spiritual sense.

Hi John,
I’ve been watching this thread develop for the past month and have seen all the good council
given here. One of the best interpretations of how a man deals with his religion when it
comes to freemasonry can be viewed by watching the Ben Franklin clips hosted by this website.
I have been a mason for 10 years and am a very religious, God fearing Christian man. I have
sat as Chaplin for the Lodge for 5 years and have been a Deacon for my church for almost 15
years. What I have learned is that many religious individuals feel that their religious beliefs are
the correct ones and many close minded individuals actually believe that by
practicing their religion is the only way to be accepted into Heaven. This is unfortunate!!
When I say a prayer out loud during a Church service, I am praying to God through his
Son, Jesus Christ. When I say a prayer out loud in Lodge, I am praying to that same God,
and in my heart it is through His Son, Jesus Christ; but in my Jewish Brother’s heart,
it is to the God who appeared to Moses and the God who spoke to Elisha; in essence, the
same God. To get to the point, we don’t as Masons, voice our own opinions about religion
when we are present in the Lodge room, and I don’t, as a Mason voice my opinion about
Masonry while in a Church setting. There has been nothing taught to me during my membership
as a Freemason that has conflicted with my religious beliefs, and there has been nothing
that I have been taught in my religious education that conflicts with my attachment to
Freemasonry. This is every man’s own journey and the Dear Lord gave us freedom of choice.
The Fraternity is made up of good men of all faiths and you will NEVER see a man being
judged for his religious beliefs. This is only one of the many good things that make up
the principals of this great Fraternity.

Now when you say “the only way in to heaven” do you mean that there are many paths into heaven, or do you mean denominations
Thank you, Jay, for an eloquent and heartfelt message.
I think, Dr. Faustus, that these so-called preachers would swear an oath if they were called on to give testimony in a legal proceeding. Or even maybe just to have a document notarized, as a notary is one who is empowered to administer oaths to ensure the truth of information given. The only religious group that I know of which is adamant against swearing oaths is the Society of Friends (Quakers). Due to them, in most states, and in federal courts and federal procedures, it is permitted to use the word “affirm” instead of “swear”. Richard Nixon, a Quaker, used this form at his inaugurations; I believe that Herbert Hoover did so also. But everyone knows that this is basically a matter of semantics; swearing and affirming are basically the same thing in practice, although there is actually a difference between the two.
I simply stated that many individuals believe that by practicing their faith is the
only way to get to Heaven, but I will not be pulled into a religious debate here;
this is not what this site is for. What I will tell you is the Chaplin’s duties:
It is his duty to aid us in those solemn services which we should constantly render
to our Infinite Creator, and which may, by refining our souls, strengthening our
virtues and purifying our minds, prepare us for admission into the society of those
above, to share with them that happiness which is unspeakable and everlasting.
Jim, there is one path and it belongs to God as does everything else in this world.
We, as humans, can only hope to be on it when we are called to leave this Earth.
@Jay I just wanted to make sure I fully understood you point I hate misinformation and thanks
My name is John by the way
@REYoung Thanks for the reply and I didn’t get my name form the book Faust(I get this a lot) but I got it form a fighting game character named Faust who is a Doctor with a paper bag on his head. http://guilty-gear.wikia.com/wiki/Faust

Well then I’m sure this preacher doesn’t go to doctors (who take the Hypocratic Oath), or any public official who takes an oath of office. Sounds like all US Presidents are bad Christians because they take an oath when they are sworn in as president. Also, I hope that preacher never needs a police officer or a firefighter, because they take oaths too, so obviously they are evil doers.
Bottom line is, it will depend on the preacher (which shows right there that being a preacher doesn’t make you right). There is a reverend as a member in my lodge, and there are many ministers who are and have been Freemasons. The reasons why ministers, just like anyone else, has problems with Freemasonry is because someone has given them incorrect information and they have acted on it.
Here is a great read about Christian ministers and Freemasonry.
I am assuming you are asking the moderators to delete or lock the thread.
And we are happy to lock the thread here. But since there are some good questions and answers here I would rather leave the thread up and lock rather than delete it.
But since we haven’t seen any activity here in over 2 months (with the possible exception of spam) I’m wondering what precipitated the request?
Also, I can’t remember how old you said you were, but since you said you liked a Faust avatar character, if you are under the age of 21 I was wondering if you have checked out the Order of DeMolay. It’s a young men’s leadership building organization where, incidentally, the young men are working in a 3D virtual collaborative world as well as creating full gaming in Unity 3D.
Here’s a couple of links. Cool organization that has it’s roots in Freemasonry and is still part of the Masonic family. I wish I would have joined when I was young.
Also will have some high end Unity Gaming stuff in a couple of weeks to look at—keep checking the Web site, and let us know if you want more info. I will leave the thread open until you answer either here or in an email or PM
Thank You, I have my reasons for wanting the thread locked. I think the OP let out too much info about me. Anyway All of the core questions are still here so its fine. I’m 18 so I’ll try to check it out, My great grandpa(who’s a 33degree in Kentucky apparently) told me i should wait till after college to join a lodge as It would cost a lot of money , it takes a lot of reading a time, and maybe a college frat would be better for me at the moment(or when ever they allow you to pledge). Thanks for all the help and I promise to try to defend the organization form misinformation.
Oh and just a little fun fact that game Guilty Gear has some references to Freemasonry. The main “Good guy’ Ky is the leader of a group called Holy Order which is an odd combo of The Knights of Templar and Freemasons, and In his stage there’s a weird heavy metal version of a square and compass and the stage looks a little like a masonic meeting hall.
No worries. Thanks. No info out there that you haven’t provided. Thanks for the game info -note only that the “kingdom” is not a game but a private virtual world.
