Some degrees are “Tyled” some are “Guarded”.  What’s the difference, other than semantic?

Uh. Er, well, in CA, every degree is “Tyled”... I’m not familiar with “Guarded.”

The only guards I know are at the South, West, and East gates.

Perhaps I should have been more clear.  Within York rite some degrees are one or the other.  There should be a reason.

Sorry, I’m only a 3rd degree MM, but there are a lot of York Rite Brothers
on this Forum. I’m interested in finding out the answer also, as long as I
am entitled. If not, I’ll just have to wait a few years!

No problem.  I am a PM of my lodge, I will be High Priest of my chapter next year.  I am shooting for knowledge from my more informed brethren.

Unfortunately we don’t have the York Rite in England, it being an American invention.

However as a speaker of English, I would hazard a guess that it is just a case of 2 different words being used to describe the same thing and possibly because the focus of some of those degrees are not the builder’s trade and so tyling would no longer seem appropriate.

Actually Brethren, with all due respect and appreciation to all, this is not a place for a Mason to ask this question. Please read the “rules” of this Forum. The Ask a Freemason Forum is for non Masons to ask questions of actual Freemasons (even questions about appendant bodies like the York Rite). It is not, however, a Masonic discussion board for Masons to ask questions of other Masons. There are plenty of those forums out there for us.  Also, Brother Ron, please note in the Rules that Master Masons need to identify their Lodge in their Profile.

I will be closing this thread. If anyone has more information they would like to provide to the original poster please use PM.
Thanks to all.

And by the way, Brother Jay, so no one is confused reading this who is not a Mason, you are not “only” a third degree Mason. As you know, there is no higher degree than the Third. That is why we call the others “appendant”.
