Sirs:

First off I would like to thank you for everything you have done in the past to assist the development of mankind as stewards of our planet. I am the grandson of a Shriner and after discussing with my Father (not a Mason but of the same values of hard work and family), I am curious about Freemasonry.

To that end I was curious about the concept of revenge, and whether it is considered a proper value of Brotherhood. I have been a student of philosophy with an interest in consciousness and the impact of actions on it.

In some situations related to Justice there is a need for measured responses to harmful actions. However, I am curious about the Masonic perspective to this aspect of the human condition.

Thanks again and I look forward to March 8th.

I am hesitant about approaching this topic. If you ask 100 masons, you will probably get 100 different answers. Masonry does teach the four cardinal virtues: Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence, and Justice. As far as I am concerned, Justice trumps revenge.

The lessons of Freemasonry are conveyed through our ritual ceremony of initiation.  Although there is a great variety among those topics, they can generally be boiled down to Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.  The issue of revenge is not addresses, and is one of the areas where the individual is left to make his own decisions.

C-Horse, you comments are a little confusing to me.  Are you speaking about Freemasons or mankind in general?  As to your thoughts on the original poster stating that Freemason’s are stewards to mankind, I see where one would become upset with the notion that a mankind organization would be of that statue to God, but please understand that Freemasonry has never, and will never take that position.  Freemasonry thoughts and beliefs are to make good men better man by holding one another accountable to those laws given to us by GOD and land.  And due to that, Freemason’s work on providing to communities and to all who are in need of assistances.  Without speaking for the original poster, I believe that this is his thought; Mason’s are stewards to humanity, under that of a Deity.

To the comment about giving to the Jimmy Fund, each individual Masonic brother gives to the charity of his choosing.  Personally, I am a huge supporter of the Jimmy Fund.  There are millions of charities that masons help with, and each lodge, district, and or Grand Lodge has their specific charities.

In regards to the homeless/poor, the Shriners (a Masonic body) donates time, money, and man power everyday to families who have children that are in need of medical attention but the finical burden due to these medical procedures would hurt the family, or in other cases, the families just cannot afford services.

And for the last comment about having thousands of dollars invested in oil, Masons are your neighbor, employer, or possibly friend, and are no different then anyone else.  Freemasonry is not a political group that lobbies for political rights.  In fact, Politics’ cannot be discussed at a Masonic function.

I appreciate your thoughts and comments, and if there is anything you would like further answers about, please feel free to post.  It is always great to get new idea’s and ways that we can support more people on a daily basis.
