Can you be gay or bisexual and a Freemason?

Hey everyone, hope you are well.

I am interested in finding out if being homosexual or bisexual would preclude a man from joining as a Freemason?

I’m aware that persons in lodges could have different understandings about such matters, however, is there a generalised position on this?

Best,

Not at all. It’s not even something that gets asked about. I know a number - but only because they’ve come to social events with their partners. It’s no big deal at all.

Well be careful with the way you are asking here.  The subject line of your post asks if you can be gay or bisexual…the answer is yes…

But then in your question, you asked if it would preclude someone from joining, in which case the answer is no.

Just want to give you the heads up that you maybe be getting yes’s and no’s to answer this.

Best,

Actully there are juristictions where it can be problematic so its not that clear cut.

Ah yes, I completely forgot (or put out of my mind) such jurisdictions.

So to be accurate, I would say that it SHOULDN’T matter, but sadly in some jurisdictions it does.

Thank you for this, your kindness and acceptance on the topic means a lot to me personally.

A man’s sexuality has not been an issue in English Lodges since 1967

It’s not an issue. I whiteballed a gay.

Still, I would expect all brethren gay, bi or straight to strictly keep their sexuality outside the lodge.

It’s not an issue to me.

Having said that, I’ll point out that Freemasonry is a Fraternity. Men fellowshiping together and bonding as men. Personally I have no desire to hang around a bunch of flamboyantly gay guys, and even less inclined to see them with their partners or talk about their affections for each other. To expand on THAT, I dont really care to talk to the Lodge brothers about their wives and making kissy face or pillow talk either…

Finally I would NOT black ball a candidate for being gay. Honestly in the “work” we do it doesn’t matter any more than than if your TV repairman was gay. If a man says he believes in God, and gets a favorable report from an investigation committee, there is rarely any reason not to give him a chance.

Here in MA, its not an issue at all. I know several members of our organization who are gay. I even know of a married couple who attend the same lodge-and one of them is the son of a PM. The issue of someone’s sexuality doesnt come up when voting. And, well, it shouldnt. Who you decide to love, doesnt affect our work within the Craft.
