Greetings Brothers,

Some of the Blue Lodges in my area take degree work very seriously and that’s a good thing. It made me appreciate the experience.

I am also now a Companion but I did not feel quite the same way coming through the Royal Arch. It appears that my local Royal Arch Chapter doesn’t require memorization of degree work. So imagine my surprise when I realized the degree team was reading every aspect of the degree work. Is that normal? Does anyone belong to a Jurisdiction where the Royal Arch and Royal and Select degrees are performed from memory?

Can’t comment on R&S as I’m not a member, but certainly we are expected to do RA from memory - and I expect the same to be true for R&S.

Ok thanks. I don’t want to say that it was disappointing…but it was kind of a let down.  I was just use to seeing things done by memory (in lodge). So when I read about the beauty of the RA degrees I was expecting something different.

In both my Chapter and Council we have to memorize the part of our officer position for both opening / closing AND ritual. In July I will Be elected Captain of the Host In the Royal Arch and Captain of the Guard in the Select Master. I have already learned the opening / closings and am now working on the rituals.
