Hello.  Is Kabbalah relevant to the Masonic tradition? I know there is much fancy and lore surrounding Kabbalah (and many variations on the Jewish tradition), but I have come to understand it as an elegant and grounded methodology.  If not, is the building of character in Freemasonry analogous?  Thank you

While I’m not familiar with Kabbalah other than a surface understanding, I can tell you that our ritual uses stories from the Old Testament to deliver our lessons.

Well, if you drill down deep enough, it’s possible to find parallels between anything and everything, but so far as I can tell, the link between Kabbalah and Freemasonry is essentially negligible.

Freemasonry uses symbolism and allegory to teach proper behaviour and mindset. A square, for instance, reminds one so taught that he should deal with everyone fairly. There is not that much mysticism, in other words.

Which is not to say that some individual Masons do not get involved with mysticism and such, it’s just that Masonry as a group or philosophy doesn’t.

There are parallels, but not the same I should say. Bro. Bob is right in saying that we use symbolism and and allegories primarily in our degrees.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am not a practitioner of Kabbalah, but I do respect the history and symbolism. The use of symbols in naming and developing our deepest aspirations is a great human gift.

Any Jewish brethren or Kabbalists who can spread light on this?

This may be a little late, but, if you listen to podcasts at all, I was just listening to one on my way to work this morning, that specifically talked about the Kaballah. It was on The Masonic Roundtable, it was an older podcast, I believe the episode is number 54. It is a very interesting episode regarding this, and can likely answer your questions.
