I was on you tube looking around and I decided to type in Freemason. One of the videos came on and it was a Rap song about Freemasons and it was titled that. I also have seen pictures of younger Freemasons taking pictures as if it was a gang. I am not a Freemason just yet. But, how do you guys feel about people “commercializing” Freemasons and profiting from it?

You’re going to have to be more specific.  I have no idea what this video is.  Perhaps you can include a link so we can see for ourselves?  There’s lots of silly stuff on the internet about Freemasons.  According to one youtube video, Beyonce is a Freemason!

They’re just using Masonry to make a play on words in their rhyme.  People will believe anything.
The Masons don’t sponsor that junk.  Not to mention, it is just BAD hip-hop.  I mean my MOM can flow better than that!  Would I say that about a brother?

But why listen to me?  Take the words right out of Rick Ross’s mouth.  Watch the second clip on this page, from MTV.

http://www.freemasoninformation.com/2010/07/rick-ross-free-mason-fraternal-shark-jump/

You can hear in that clip (if you can, like, make out, like, know w’aIm sain’?, like, trying to say, knaw mean?), that he obviously doesn’t know the first thing about Freemasonry but apparently thinks that we are the same as the devil.  Would a Mason say that?  Furthermore, no Mason calls themselves a “Free Mason”.  To us, it is one word.  Freemason.

Anyway, we expect this sort of thing.  Just because someone makes a song or a movie about something doesn’t make it true.  Look at Johnny Depp’s “From Hell”.  Fiction, based on a graphic novel, and disproven, yet people still believe it…because they want to.

As for Jay-Z….once again, take it from his own mouth:

b-tch I said I was amazing
Not that I’m a Mason
It’s amazing that I made it though the maze that I was in

He’s clearly saying right there that you misunderstood him in an earlier song and that he’s not a Mason.

Not sure there is much more to say about that.  Jay-Z and Rick Ross seem to have answered your question themselves.

Here is a song by a Masonic Brother that I think is much more indicative of the benefits of Freemasonry:

Thank you, Bro. Damron, for your musical talents.

That was a nice song with some pretty neat pictures of charity events, fun activities and Lodge meetings playing in the background when he was singing.

There are plenty of genres in the music industry that are influenced by Freemasonry.  I personally don’t seek out songs inspired fraternally but I do appreciate the ones I’ve come across.

I too have heard the Rick Ross an Jay Z are Prince Hall Freemasons, as well as Mos Def…is this true?  That’s still to be confirmed publically.

Please allow me to publicly confirm that none of those guys are Masons… although I’d love to meet Mos Def, he was a hoot in “The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy”.
