I have heard of freemasons months ago on the radio. I never really looked into it.

But lately I have been trying to find information about it and I don’t know what to believe.

I live in Stoughton, MA. Pretty close to Boston. I have been very curious of freemasons, I don’t think I’ve ever known one but then again I wouldn’t know because I never asked.

What are you guys all about? Like things you do, why did you become a free mason?

If anyone could help me it would be nice.

Thank you,

Tim

Timothy,

You’ve come to the right place. I’m not in Massachusetts, but keep checking this space frequently. The Mass. boys will reply to you in detail very shortly. Thanks for contacting this Forum.

Hi, Timothy-

Thank you for visiting Ask a Freemason LIVE and for your interest in Freemasonry. You have certainly come to the right place to learn more. As the name of the site implies, we believe that connecting with Freemasons is the best way to answer your questions and get the information you need. Although doing it electronically is a good place to start, nothing can replace having a conversation in person. You are fortunate that there is a lodge building in Stoughton. Rising Star Lodge meets there. Mr. Gordon B. Chisholm is their Secretary and a good resource. He can be reached at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). I would encourage you to contact him and let him know of you interest; I know he would welcome your inquiry. Also, in September you will begin hearing our ads again as we create awareness for our next Open House which will be held on Saturday, October 16th.

To try and address some of your specific questions, I don’t know if you have an opportunity to visit the FAQs, but they might be able to answer some of your more general questions, http://www.askafreemason.org/topten/index.htm.

As for the question of why we became a Masons, that is generally different for everyone. I joined because my father was an active Mason. I knew that both of my grandfathers were also Masons. At the time I did not know too much about the fraternity, but I figured that if it was good enough for them I should at least check it out. At the very least I thought it would be a meaningful way for my father and I to do something together. It has turned out to be that and so much more.

I occasionally wonder if I would have found my was to Freemasonry if it had not been for my father. I am a fairly active, busy person and I suspect that I would think that I didn’t have time for it. I commend you on showing the initiative to check it out for yourself.

Good luck doing your research. Hope you enjoy the journey.
-Robert

This is certainly the place to learn about Freemasonry. (There are many excellent sites, and hundreds of books). Freemasonry is a way of life, a philosophy, a brotherhood, a self-improvement course, and much more. I became a Mason, for the simple fact, that men I respected were Masons. Both my Grandfathers were Masons, my father joined the fraternity just six months before I did. There are many famous men who were Masons, including about 14 US Presidents. One of my favorite celebrity Masons is the late Mel Blanc, the voice of cartoons, that I enjoyed as a child, and still enjoy.

Hey there Tim.

Welcome to the site.  I’m here in Weymouth, not far from you at all, so Robert and I can attest to the fact that you are literally surrounded by Masons.  Lots of great lodges in the Boston area and suburbs.

Take Robert’s suggestions and read the FAQs and other resources, and feel free let us know if there are any questions that are unanswered.
