HI
As one of the most powerful fraternities, i did not want to disrespect any mason. My question is does the fraternity discriminate? I am aware of the original reasons to keep african americans out” Freeborn- Mason”. Is it still possible to become a member. I also know that a fraternity has a system of “black ball”. I fear that I may be victim of this if I seek membership. Furthermore, I am well aware of the prince hall mason fraternity, however, I don’t know if they are accepted on same level. Should I ask someone at the nearest lodge. If they reply no or if I feel as if I am a victim of black ball should I go to another lodge. Are you limited to your residence in regards to asking a lodge about membership. In closing, I am only asking a question out of curiosity aand interest. I did not want disrespect any mason or prince hall mason with my questions.
Thanks

Andre ---

Thank you for your interest in Masonry.  No need to worry about offending anyone.  Questions like these are why this forum was created in the first place!

It is a little difficult to answer your question without know in which state you live.  However, I can easily answer your question, if you live in Massachusetts.

No, the color of one’s skin has no bearing on petitioning (applying) for membership.  Masonry is open to anyone in Massachusetts who:
- Is man
- Is at least 18 years old
- Believes in a Supreme Being
- Has a good moral character

The “black ball” system is in place to make sure only those that meet the above requirements are accepted into a Lodge.  Putting a “black ball” for a vote without “just cause” is a Masonic punishable offense.  However, be aware, there are limitations in regards to “going to another Lodge” if you are “black balled” in one.  But, unless you don’t meet the 4 requirements above, you need not fear a “black ball.”

In Massachusetts, Prince Hall Masonry is very active and is fully recognized by the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts.

As far as residence, the only limitation is if you live in Massachusetts, you should petition a Lodge in Massachusetts.  Typically, you would petition the Lodge to which you live the closest.  (It doesn’t make sense to try and join a Lodge 100 miles from where you live, as it would be difficult to take part in the live of that Lodge.

If you’d live, please send me a private message, telling me in which state/town you live and I can answer your questions more throughly, and if you so choose, help you begin your Masonic journey.
