I have been interested in the Freemasonry for quite some time now, my Great Grandfather was a master mason.  I do not know if I know anyone who is a Freemason, how can I find out?  I understand that one rule is not to discuss the subject unless asked.  or is it better to simply visit an open house?

Thanks for your interest.

Your note is good example of why this Forum exists.

Most non-Masons think that they should not bring up the subject or “discuss it unless asked.” In fact, it’s just the opposite. The way you become a Mason is by asking. In most states, you will never be asked. Although some states now allow it, even our campaign to “Ask a Freemason” is really just a public service campaign to let potentially great men know how to join.

Freemasons love to talk about the Craft (as we call it), and no Mason will be offended if you ask him if he is a Freemason. In fact, it’s usually his cue to help you find out more. Masons sometimes wear lapel pins or rings that non Masons may be unfamiliar with—but if they do, I guarantee they are ready to talk about Freemasonry with you.

also, the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire’s Website is http://nhgrandlodge.org/

I encourage you to check out the Lodge closest to you on the Site and give them a call.

And let us know how it goes.

Let me echo Brother Bob’s advice. Masonry is NOT a secret organization, we wear rings, belt buckles, etc. to show everyone that we are Masons. I got the legislation passed in Kentucky to get Masonic vehicle license plates in KY. I am always delighted to talk about Masonry, with anyone, be they mason or not. I will “talk your ear right off” ,trust me!

If you see a man with a masonic ring on his hand, just ask him “are you a freemason?”, and he will respond to you. Just that simple.

If you are truly interested in Masonry, you need not wait for an open house. Just look up the nearest lodge in the phone book, or on the internet. Then contact the lodge secretary, and ask him, how you learn more about Masonry. He will be glad to help you. And then, if you decide that Masonry is right for you, then you can obtain a petition (application) form, and you are on your way to becoming a Mason.
