I have been considering joining the Freemasons for a year or so now, and I read online somewhere that I would need to know a Freemason that could vouch for my character.  Is this true? What if I don’t know any Freemasons?

Thank you very much for the question.  While it is true that you will need a Mason to sponsor your petition, he does no necessarily have to vouch for your character.  During the application process an investigative committee will be formed by the lodge to meet with you, as well as talk to your personal references.  If you do not know a Mason to sponsor your application before beginning the process, you will get to know several Masons as you are learning more about the Fraternity and the lodge, and one of them will likely be willing to sponsor you.

Good Question.  It depends on the regulations for the Grand Lodge of the state of your residence.

For example: In Kentucky, your petition (application) form, must be signed by two (2) masons, who are members of the lodge that you are petitioning.

In New York, your petition must be signed by three (3), individuals, who need not be masons, but must know you well.

I suggest that you contact the secretary at the lodge nearest your residence, and ask him what the procedure is for your state. You can also contact the Grand Secretary, at the Grand Lodge in your state of residence.

Welcome To Freemasonry!
